Avram Grant, head coach of the Ghana Black Stars, has said he is focused on making history by qualifying Ghana to the semi final of a world cup tournament, a feat no African country has ever achieved.
Ghana joined Cameroun as the only two African countries to have reached the quarter finals of a FIFA World Cup [Ghana reached the quarter finals of the South Africa 2010 World Cup, where the infamous Luis Suarez goal line handball denied the Black Stars a winning goal and a semis berth].
Against this background, Grant wants to be the first coach to record such a feat [of qualifying an African country beyond the semis of a World Cup].
Speaking at a press conference before leading the Black Stars to hold their third day training session, the former Chelsea gaffer said nothing is going to distract him as he is motivated by the challenge to make history.
“My target is to lead the first African country to make history at the world cup (reach a semi final place) and be an African Champion at the same time.
“The talent is in abundance and that is why I want to build a team – a strong squad and infact, a winning team.
“Since my first defeat against Senegal in the opening match of the 2015 AFCON, we won all the games until the final [lost to Cote d’Ivoure).
Grant has led Ghana to qualify to Gabon 2017, where he will be making his second appearance as a coach after recording a runner-up position in his maiden continental tourney last year.
