The biggest fight of the year for most Ghanaian boxing fans will take center stage at the Santander Arena, Pennsylvania on Friday, September 11, 2016 when Ghana’s Richard Commey(24-0, 22 KOs) takes on American Robert Easter Jnr (17-0 (14KOs) for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Lightweight title.
BOUT PROFILING
The title, which was vacated by Cuban superstar, Rances Barthelemy three months ago, will see the two unbeaten boxers thrill the world with some exciting 12-round contest.
The Ghanaian Lightweight is based in the UK, and has recorded 17 straight stoppage wins before showing his stamina in a 12-round domination of Gary Buckland.
Despite his all conquering tales, his billing on Goodwin Promotion cards at York Hall never ignited his career which saw him subsequently move to Sauerland Promotions, putting him on the verge of world championship glory.
His opponent, Easter Jnr, on the other hand, burst onto the scene in April when he blitzed a fading Argenis Mendez in 5 rounds after a powerful right hand ended the contest in brutal fashion back in April this year.
Commey, who is 29 years old, will have experience on his side as against Easter Jr., who is 25.
But regardless of age, both fighters are extremely fresh and fired up for the task ahead.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Easter Jr’s an orthodox boxer, has ridiculous reach advantage which will prove the hardest obstacle for Commey to overcome. The blistering speed behind Easter Jr’s punches brings out the power and, Commey will need every bit of that sturdy chin of his to take those incoming missiles.
Commey, who is also an orthodox boxer himself, will need to set a high tempo from the very start of the contest. If Easter Jr is allowed to build a lead in the early goings, then he could settle into a rhythm that will prove too difficult to shake.
Easter Jr enjoys teasing opponents on the front foot, where he is then able to control the range. Commey must use hard faints to force Easter Jr to back up, and then he must pounce quickly, taking his opportunity to back his gangly opponent onto the ropes.
Easter Jr’s sharpness and accuracy will see him being comfortable for much of the fight, while he will have to see off the occasional nervy moment as Commey looks to dig to the body before swinging clubbing punches to the head.
PREDICTION
Commey will settle with a points victory by a close margin that may reflect very uglier at the end of the 12-round contest.
