Ghana Black Stars midfielder, Agyemang Badu, opines that the rationale behind the Dede Ayew-led campaign of they (players) funding their own airfare to honour the last AFCON qualifier against Rwanda is to justify their love and patriotism to the nation.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, on August 29, revealed that the regular practice of sending Black Stars players based outside the country business class tickets to report for games will not be possible ahead of their upcoming game due to financial constraints.
Badu, who joined the team to train on Wednesday at the Accra Sports Stadium ahead of the game, in an interview with the media, mentioned they are focused on ending the qualifier without a defeat and won’t be distracted by the kind patriotic gesture they (players) have shown.
He said; “We have love for our country and that is the whole idea behind the purchase of our own airfare tickets and the kind gestures from our deputy captain, Andre Ayew.
“We are relaxed and focused on the game this Saturday. When money is hard to come by, it is only right for us to show patriotism and that is what we did.
“We are not thinking of how much the winning bonus is, at least not until the end of the game,” he added.
The Black Stars sit atop Group H with 13 points from 5 games played and have scored 13 goals so far while conceding just 2.
