Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s agent has turned up the heat in contract talks with Borussia Dortmund.
Mino Raiola told German newspaper Bild: ‘Why should we extend now? Miki has a contract that runs through 2017 and we’re going to keep considering his future.’
Mkhitaryan scored for 23 goals and claimed 32 assists across all competitions for Dortmund last season, attracting a long list of suitors, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Juventus
The 27-year-old is happy in the Bundesliga and at Dortmund, and the latest pronouncements from Raiola may be mainly a negotiating tactic.
The agent is a tough man to bargain with. He represents the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku and has secured big-money deals for all of them.
The sticking point in the Mkhitaryan negotiations appears to be the long-term future of Dortmund’s coach, however.
Thomas Tuchel and Mkhitaryan are close; the Armenian credits Tuchel with improving his mental game.
‘I’m very thankful to him – he changed the way I think,’ Mkhitaryan told the German sport magazine kicker earlier this season.
The former Shakhtar Donetsk No 10 wants a clause inserted in any new Dortmund contract that would allow him to leave if Tuchel took a job elsewhere.
Dortmund have been unwilling to meet this demand and may be prepared to let Mkhitaryan play out the last season of his deal and leave on a free next summer.
