United have been linked with the 17-year-old all season, but have been waiting to sort out their managerial situation before stepping up their interest.

And now Jose Mourinho, who was appointed as Old Trafford boss last week, is said to have sanctioned a move for the England Under-19 international.

According to The Sun, the Red Devils have submitted a bid worth up to £15million for the promising centre-half, who can also double up as a midfielder.

United are reportedly willing to pay top-flight rivals West Ham an initial £10m this summer, with £5m in performance-based add-ons.

Oxford, who has two years remaining on his current deal, is said to have recently turned down a new long-term contract worth £12,000 a week.

The youngster captained the Hammers’ Under-21s side to the Premier League Cup this season and also impressed in the first-team’s victory over Arsenal on the opening day of the season.
