According to Le Parisien via The Sun, Liverpool are keen on buying Barcelona’s Jeremy Mathieu.
The French publication claim a number of clubs are monitoring the Barcelona defender’s situation at the Nou Camp this summer, and Liverpool are among them as the Reds make contact over his availability.
The French international defender joined Barca from fellow La Liga side Valencia in the summer of 2014, yet for the past two seasons he has largely been on the peripherals of the first team.
With competition for places high and the Catalans adding further options at the back with the addition of Samuel Umtiti, questions have been asked of Mathieu’s future.
Liverpool are in the market for a new defender having sold Martin Skrtel to Fenerbahce and releasing the experienced Kolo Toure following the expiration of his contract on Merseyside.
Jurgen Klopp’s side don’t have much strength in numbers at the back, and it said that the Reds boss is keen on bringing in a player with Champions League experience ahead of the new season.
