Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Cameroon Close To AYC 2017 Qualification

Defending champions, Nigeria together with Senegal, South Africa and Cameroon, are a step closer towards booking a place at next year’s African Youth Championships (AYC) in Zambia after scoring important wins over the weekend.

Nigeria, who are seven-times winners of this event, beat Sudan 2-1 away, and, with the return encounter to come off on home soil, they will be confident of confirming passage to the event in Zambia next year.

Senegal recorded an impressive 3-1 first leg victory over Ghana in Dakar on Saturday, and, have the advantage going into the return fixture in Cape Coast next weekend.

South Africa also scored an important away victory as they defeated neighbours Lesotho 2-0 and, will be the odds on favourites to advance after the return encounter on home soil.

Another side that will feel less pressure is Cameroon who will take a 3-0 lead into the return encounter against Libya next week.

Elsewhere in the qualifiers for next year’s event, Egypt beat Angola 1-0, Burkina Faso were held to a barren draw by Mali at home just as visiting Guinea and Gambia played out a 0-0 draw in Bakau, near Banjul.

Seven teams will emerge from the qualifiers to join host Zambia for the final tournament of the 20th edition of U-20 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for 26 February to 12 March 2017.
