Manchester City Announces The Departure of Two Players

Manchester City have confirmed the departures of Martin Demichelis and Richard Wright, after their contracts expired.

The pair saw their deals expire on Thursday – the last day of June – and with the transfer window now officially open, their exits have been made formal.

Demichelis, 35, joined Manchester City in 2013 on an initial two-year deal after beginning the season with Atletico Madrid.

The move saw Demichelis and former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini reunited after their time together at Malaga, resulting in a Premier League triumph in their first seasons at the club.

Demichelis and Pellegrini also won two League Cups, but ultimately the latter’s departure this summer spelt the end of the centre-back’s time at the Etihad with Pep Guardiola coming in.

The former Argentina international’s poor performances last season has prompted the club not to offer him a new deal, meaning he has now been released and is a free agent, they announced on their official website.

Meanwhile, former England goalkeeper Wright has managed to remain on Manchester City’s books since 2012 despite not making a single appearance during his time with the Citizens.

The 38-year-old former Arsenal man managed to earn new extensions every year, with Pellegrini clearly keen on having some competition in between the sticks for the likes of Joe Hart and Willy Caballero.

There had been suggestions he was kept around to help City meet the homegrown quota imposed by the Premier League.

The club have also confirmed that Wright has now retired from football, after making 448 career appearances.
