It was the 84th minute and Arsenal were clinging onto a slender 1-0 lead over a Norwich side inspired by the threat of relegation. Arsene Wenger had one substitute left and appeared to use it wisely.
Defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin stripped down and moved towards the touchline, the board went up and Alexis Sanchez’s number was called.
The Chilean had struggled throughout the game but had, as usual, run himself ragged trying to make a definitive contribution. Coquelin would add more defensive stability in the final minutes, making it a natural move for Wenger to make.
But Sanchez was having none of it and stormed straight down the Emirates Stadium tunnel, never to reemerge. Fans were quick to wonder if their star attacker had picked up an injury, but it appears that he was simply throwing a classic hissy fit.
Wenger confirmed that Sanchez went down the tunnel out of dissatisfaction but appeared to shrug off the suggestion that he would be reprimanded for such a move.
