2nd National Road Barton Relay Launched

The 2016 Road Baton Relay, a 30-kilometre relay marathon aimed at pupils of the second high schools has been launched at the Media centre of the Accra Sports stadium.


The marathon event is meant to promote and inculcate into the youth, the thirst for exercise and prevent lifestyle diseases.



Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, who launched the event for the second year running called on the participating athletes to aim at choosing a career in sports if not become an athlete by profession.


He added. “students should not pursue academic excellence in isolation to sports as both are necessary for the for the health and growth of an individual.”




The spokesperson of Dreamland Sports Plus, William Ocansey disclosed that the route of the race starts at Baatsona total road through the Nungua Barrier and then through the Nungua Laskala road and end at the Accra Sports Stadium.


The start point for the barton relay this year is generally for both boys and girls unlike the maiden edition where the girls started the race from the 18km.


The CEO of Dreamland Sports Plus, Emmanuel Ola William, announced that registration for the event was free, adding that each school was restricted to six relay teams each – for mixed schools six boys and girls each whilst the same number also goes for the single sex schools.



Speaking on behalf of BlueCrest College, country director and rector of the school, Vivek K. Verma disclosed Winners of both male and female events will have a fully paid undergraduate scholarship covered by BlueCrest College.


 

The event is sponsored by Blue Crest College, Digestive Biscuits and supported by the National Sports Authority and the Ghana Police Service.
