May 9th Referee Questions The Boldness of Ghanaian Match Officials

The Referee at the center of the May 9 disaster game between Hearts of Oak and Kotoko, Jacob Wilson Sey has questioned the boldness of the current generation of match official during epic clashes.

The retired Cape Coast-based referee was accused of allowing Ishmael Addo’s purported offside goal to stand to draw Hearts of Oak level after Lawrence Adjei had opened the scoring for Asante Kotoko- a decision which angered supporter of the Porcupine Warriors.

The disgruntled fans started threw missiles onto the pitch in protest of referee Sey’s decision with some supporters claiming he disregarded a flag by his assistant referee signaling Addo was in an offside position.

The Police reacted by firing tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowd which resulted in stampede leading to the death over 125 fans on that Black Wednesday 15 years ago.

Speaking in an interview with Starr FM in Accra, Referee Wilson Sey said that although the current crop of referees are doing well, they are not bold enough to take decisions at crunch times.

“I think this era of referees are doing well but their boldness is questionable because some of us never depended on officials for anything and that made [us] gain respect,” he said.

The 15th anniversary commemoration of the May 9 Accra Sports Stadium Disaster was marked on Monday in Accra and Kumasi.
