Ernest Thompson On GPL Packaging

Former Hearts of Oak board secretary Ernest Thompson has prescribed solutions to the on-going debate as to whether the Ghana Premier League is attractive or not.

Youth and Sports minister, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuije, recently in a radio interview, branded the GPL ‘unattractive’ hence the reason why the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has laboured to get it [the league] a headline sponsor.

But in a swift response, the GFA president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, rebuffed those claims insisting the GPL is the most attractive sports brand in Ghana and they [football administrators and football loving fans] have toiled to make it as such.

And this, the lawyer cum football administrator, apparently to give his take on what makes the league attractive or unattractive.

Speaking on Happy FM’s Anopabosuo Sports show, the soft-spoken Thompson said; “We need dual matches – colts and division one games to be played as curtain-raisers as well as musical concerts to make match day packages an attractive one.

“Football is like any other product, it needs to be marketed well and surely it will sell.

“We need to get the National Lottery Authority (NLA) involved and draw a bet and win event just for the GPL.

“From my personal perspective, we need to enlarge the Ghana Football Association like the English Football Association has – the premier league board run and manage the league on their own whilst other administrative duties are handled by the FA themselves and that will improve the game here in Ghana.”

The 2015/16 GPL season has been arguably the most interesting. With just three games to end the season, Wa All Stars lead the log with 48 points, three points away from second-placed Aduana Stars whilst the relegation battle has never been this interesting.

Just five points separates Ashgold in 10th position and Sekondi Hasaacas in 15th position.
