SWAG GS Questions MoYS" Direction And Mandate

Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) General secretary, William Ezah, has shared his thoughts on the wrangling between the Minister of Youth and Sports (MoYS), Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and the Kwesi Nyantakyi-led Ghana Football Association (GFA), branding it as a ‘needless confrontation’.

Both Kwesi Nyantakyi and Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuije have been embroiled in verbal exchanges since the latter assumed office as sector minister of sports.

Nii Lantey, in a radio interview, accused Nyantakyi of disrespecting him after the latter branded his comments on media platforms as being similar to those of a ‘serial caller’.

The minister suggested that, since the state can’t afford the cost of airfare for the Black Stars first team players, ‘local’ players should be invited to play the last AFCON 2017 qualifier match against Rwanda.

Ezah, who appears to have had enough of the impasse, took to his official Facebook post to pour out his frustration over what he terms ‘needless’ arguments between the two most important personalities in Ghana football.

“Over the years, all youth and sports ministers have been failures…. A sports minister must lead policy issues and programmes and give directions and outline strategies on talent identification and grooming, infrastructural development, development of human resource base, sports administrators, doctors, and all, specialization or general sports.

He writes further; “For me, dabbling in administrative issues such as players’ bonuses, technical issues such as player selection, purchase of air tickets, especially in the open, makes me think Ghana sports is just hanging in an open air.

“We have over 30 sporting disciplines… We have no idea what to specialize in so we can commit resources and excel or engage in all so the youth can have varieties. These are the issues sports ministry should be supervising.

The post concludes; “I really don’t see the sense in open confrontation between the GFA and Minister. It’s just needless….”
