Swansea City and Ghana Black Stars attacking midfielder, Andre Ayew has been crowned Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Sports Personality of the year 2016 at the 41st MTN SWAG Awards night on Saturday.
The son of the Football maestro beat of competition from National team colleagues, Shagahai SIPG striker, Asamoah Gyan and last year winner, Harrison Afful.
Ayew was adjudged the best footballer for the year 2016 after excelling I’m his debut season in the English Premier League with Welsh side, Swansea City where he emerged as top scorer of the club with 12-goals.
The former Olympique de Marseille man also won the footballer of the year award at the 41st MTN SWAG Awards night held at the Banquet hall of the State House in Accra on Saturday night.
Rahim Ayew, the elder of the Ayew siblings, received the award on Dede’s behalf who is in Mauritius with the Ghana Black Stars in AFCON 2017 qualifier “thanked SWAG and organisers for rezoning his hard work and contribution to national team duties.”
In other categories, defemding Ghana Premier League champions, Ashgold captain, Eric Opoku received the Premiership Player of the Year award with the Black Queens and coach Yussif Basigi named as national team and coach of the year respectively.
US-based athlete, Nadia Eke won the took Female athlete of the Year award while Richard Commey was adjudged the Professional Boxer of the Year.
