Ghana’s sole boxer at this year’s Olympics Abdul Wahid Omar will today step up into Riocentrio Pavelion 6 ring as he battles Argentine Alberto Ezequiel Melian in the round of 32 bantamweight bout at 20 : 00hrs GMT
Wahid came fourth at the African Olympic qualifiers in Yaonde, Cameroon but was confirmed by Amateur International Boxing Authority (AIBA) as qualified, after a review of his semi finals bout which he failed to win whilst his opponent Alberto Ezequiel “impacto” Melian is an AIBA Pro Boxer who represented his country at London 2012 Olympic Games.
Melian who is an orthodox boxer goes into this bout as favorite considering his stature as a fighter who likes to take the steam out of his opponents with neat body work, punching with spite to the ribs. He is also equally adept at mounting attacks upstairs with blindingly fast punch combinations.
The 24 year-old Ghanaian boxer is considered a very talented boxer having being one of the brightest spot in the qualifiers for Ghana and is expected to exhibited his blistering speed and power against the ever attacking Argentine.
Omar will have to look out for the ‘power play’ of the Argentine prodigy where he combines fast moving jabs as well as his stamina,Melian compiled an impressive record for the Argentina Condors in Season III and IV of the WSB, chalking up eight wins from nine bouts.
