Barreto gladdened by immense progress of his former Ghana protégées

Mariano Barreto says he is proud to see some of the players he mentored while he was coach of Ghana going onto achieve greater things in their careers.

The Portuguese trainer quit his job abruptly having put the Black Stars on a sound footing in the beginning of the qualifiers towards the 2006 World Cup.

Barreto had the likes of Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Asamoah Gyan, Laryea Kingston, John Mensah, Mathew Amoah and the like playing under him at the time.

And even though he wasn’t the man in charge by the time Ghana qualified for its maiden World Cup campaign back in 2006, the former Ethiopia trainer is glad with what his former protégées went on to achieve.

“I am very proud to see that some of the players I worked with went on to play in the World Cup and became big stars,” he said.

“Some are still playing now and I am always happy to see them in action.”
