Cameroon brushed aside Niger 3-0 on Friday night in their 2018 Fifa World Cup qualification (CAF) second-round first leg clash at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché in Niamey.
Niger collapsed towards the end of the first-half as Cameroon ran riot scoring three times within four minutes. There were no goals in the second-half.
The home side were able to contain the Indomitable Lions in the opening stages of the encounter. However, the visitors stepped up their tempo after the half-hour mark.
In the 36th minute Cameroon’s central defensive midfielder Stephane Mbia opened the scoring against Niger with a good header.
It was soon 2-0 to the Indomitable Lions three minutes later. Portugal-based striker Vincent Aboubakar hit the back of the net from a free-kick.
Things went from bad to worse for the Menas five minutes before the halftime as Edgar Salli made it 3-0 to Cameroon.
In the second-half, Niger pushed for their first goal of the match. However, the Indomitable Lions stood firm as they protected their lead.
Niger head coach François Zahoui decided to introduce Idrissa Halidou for Mohamane Cisse in the 73rd minute as the home side looked to mount pressure onto the Cameroon defence.
Ultimately, Cameroon coach Alexandre Belinga’s charges managed to hold onto their lead and the match ended 3-0 in their favour.
The second-leg is scheduled to take place at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé on Tuesday. Egyptian referee Gehad Grisha will be in charge of the game.
