Russia 2018 Qualifier: Libya Beat Rwanda 1-0

[ad_1]

Libya’s political instability meant they played their World Cup qualifier in neutral territory, but they won 1-0 against Rwanda on Friday.

Rwanda bore the brunt of the Mediterranean Knights in Sfax, Tunisia, in the first leg of their 2018 World Cup qualifying tie. Faisal Al-Badri netted for the home side shortly after half time through a spot kick, condemning the Amavubi to yet another defeat.

This becomes the fifth straight game Rwanda have gone scoreless. Amavubi lost to Ghana 1-0 in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in September before losing 1-0 to Gabon in a friendly. And then they followed it up with 1-0 losses against Burkina Faso’s CHAN team and Tunisia’s Olympic sides.

Rwanda had hoped that a repeat of their last meeting will repeat itself, when they stunned Libya 3-0 on aggregate in 2015 Afcon qualifying.

But this game at the Stade Taieb Mhiri, was always to be a different proposition, since only nine of the 23 players Libya in those losses were available for this game.

But despite this setback, head coach Johnny McKinstry has echoed the sentiment he’s always felt: that his team are good enough to overcome such challenges. One thing is for sure, the talk must end and results must be shown in the return leg on November 17 at the Kigali Regional Stadium.

The aggregate winners will join 19 other teams in the third and final phase of qualifying for Russia 2018.
