Russia 2018 Qualifiers: South Africa Win 3-1 Away In Angola

[ad_1]

South Africa have one foot in the next round following a 3-1 first-leg 2018 Fifa World Cup second-round qualifying win over Angola at the Estadio Nacional de Ombaka on Friday.

Goals from Tokelo Rantie, Thamsanqa Gabuza and Andile Jali ending Angola’s 22-year unbeaten run in World Cup qualifiers on home soil.

Shakes Mashaba was still finding his seat on the sidelines when Angola struck the opener with 90 seconds on the clock. It was the worst possible start for the visitors who missed an opportunity at the other end before Gerson struck the opener.

The teenage striker weaved his way past the entire South African backline before firing a right-footed shot past captain Jackson Mabokgwane in the Bafana goal.

Desperate to get themselves back into the game, the visitors surged forward in search of the equaliser and were rewarded in the 14th minute.

Thabo Matlaba picked out Rantie inside the area with the Bournemouth striker finding space before guiding a low shot into the corner of the net.

Bafana took the lead six minutes later through the in-form Gabuza, the burly forward continuing his meteoric rise.

The former Golden Arrows man showed a lot of composure to finish from an acute angle after being put through on goal by Mandla Masango.

Shots at goal dried up towards the end of the first half as South Africa headed into the interval 2-1 up.

Constant pressure by Angola followed after the break, but Palancas Negras were finding it difficult to create any clear-cut chances despite bossing the possession column.

Having survived wave after wave of Angola attack, South Africa were handed a golden opportunity to double their lead after Antonio Dominique was adjudged to have brought down Ranite inside the area in the 82nd minute.

Jali duly converted from 12 yards, but the KV Oostende midfielder will miss the second leg after the referee showed him a second yellow card for inciting the Angolan crowd.

The reverse fixture is set for the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Tuesday evening.
