New Year"s beach day ends in tragedy after teen dies in Cape Town

Rescue Services officials have confirmed a 16-year-old boy has drowned in the water off Strand Jetty near Cape Town, South Africa.

Across the peninsula, officials are frantically searching for a 10-year-old child who’s been reported missing at Clifton’s First Beach.

The nation’s beaches are packed, as thousands flock to the ocean for the traditional New Year’s Day festivities.

Traffic is gridlocked along the Atlantic Aeaboard, particularly between Camps Bay and Clifton’s Fourth Beach.

Parking in the area is severely limited as more and more people are heading to the sea to take advantage of a sunny and warm Public Holiday.

The City of Cape Town’s Richard Bosman says roads along the False Bay coast are also severely congested.

Lifeguards and National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) volunteers have their work cut out for them along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, the Atlantic Seaboard and False Bay in the Western Cape.

The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon is appealing to the public to be more safety-conscious when swimming.

“We’re always just asking people to go to beaches where the lifeguards are on duty and to obey the instructions of the lifeguards. We ask them to have a safety conscious mind, especially on a day like today when everybody is at the beach or at swimming pools, inland rivers and lakes.”
