Before He Lands in Ghana, Check The Top 10 Sol Campbell Quotes

By Saddick Adams

Former England international, Arsenal and Tottenham defender Sol Campbell will arrive in Ghana on Sunday, January 17, together with Ghanaian born Netherlands player George Boateng to launch the 2016 Unity Match at the Banquet Hall, State House, Accra on Monday, January 18.

The legendary England guardsman will partner former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah for the grand launch of the event aimed at promoting peace and unity ahead of the 2016 General Elections in November.

Ghanaian fans will have the opportunity of welcoming and interacting with one of English Premiership’s most accomplished defenders of all times.

But how well do you know Sol Campbell and what are some of his famous quotes that continue to make wave in the British Media? Football Crusader compiles the top 10 quotes of the bulky man who was nicknamed the The “Sol Man”.

1 On what would have happened if his mother and father hadn’t moved from Jamaica to the UK: “I wouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t have played for my country, and represented it in a fantastic way. I’ve contributed tenfold, even more than that, in terms of what I’ve done in the game, and that would have been lost.”

2 On the prospect of leaving Tottenham for Arsenal: “Being a Spurs fan as a boy and a player for so many years, it would be hard to sign for Arsenal. I don’t think the fans here would ever forgive me.”

3 On how he’s viewed in England: “Football-wise, I’m more respected around the world than in my own country. It’s true. If I had this type of career somewhere else, I’d probably be a sir in that country by now.”

4 On moving abroad after Arsenal, before eventually joining Portsmouth: “I’m 30 now and in five years’ time I won’t be in this country. That’s definite. Italy looks good to me because it would suit my kind of football. Spain is an option.”

5 . On the honours system: “I’ve got no OBE, MBE, nothing. And no one says anything… How can I have this career? And be who I am? And no one’s said anything? To get an MBE, just three people have got to write in. Three people have never written in about Sol!”

6 On his potential: “Yes, I was a footballer, but there’s more to me than meets the eye. I’ve got more levels. So many levels. I’m not going away – and I’m going to keep on talking until things start changing.”

7  On why he wasn’t honoured or knighted: “I’ve got no OBE, MBE, nothing. And no one says anything… How can I have this career? And be who I am? And no one’s said anything? To get an MBE, just three people have got to write in. Three people have never written in about Sol!”

8 On the reason he wasn’t made England captain: “I believe if I was white, I would have been England captain for more than 10 years – it’s as simple as that.”

9  On his ambitions as an actor: “I think to act you need emotion and I’ve got a lot of that.”

10 On his future in politics: “I have got so much to offer.”

Campbell is expected to arrive tonight at the Kotoka international airport ahead of tomorrow’s 2016 Unity Match Press Launch slated for the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra.

Campbell is arriving in Ghana for the first time under the auspices of Primeval Media who are putting together two friendly matches which will feature some of the world renowned players to preach peace ahead of the 2016 elections.

The event will see Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko host the World team which will feature players such as Edgar Davids, Emile Heskey, Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, Steve Macmanaman, Patrick Kluivert and many more.
